12 Herbert Street

Clay County Communities Revitalization Association (CCCRA), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, was created in 1998 with the purpose to  stimulate economic growth, promote the assets, and preserve the heritage of Clay County, NC. Through our support of the development of the Jackrabbit Mountain Bike and Hiking Trail System, the Cherokee Homestead Exhibit, the Quanassee Path the restoration of the Historic Courthouse, and hosting the Friday Summer Concert Series on the square, CCCRA has done much to bring both tourism and businesses to Clay County. These projects have brought more visitors to Clay County and businesses have moved to the town square in Hayesville.

While these projects keep the volunteers of CCCRA quite busy, the organization is always on the lookout for more avenues to meet our mission goals for the community. In the fall of 2024, when a new opportunity presented itself, CCCRA took quick action and in November 2024, purchased the long vacant building at the corner of Herbert St. and Business 64.

Number 12 Herbert Street sits at the main intersection on the historic courthouse square, across from the Historic Courthouse/Beal Center and Nocturnal Brewing Company. Originally built in 1940 by Wiley McGlamery, it housed a hotel and café. Made possible by a restricted donation from Clay County native Ron Beal, the building will undergo a complete restoration and again will house a boutique hotel, as well as retail space.

We will document the preservation and transformation of this historic Hayesville/Clay County landmark on this page. Visit regularly to follow our progress.

PROJECT UPDATE NOVEMBER 2025 - CCCRA began the 12 Herbert Street project with the intention of renovating the building. We considered every possible way to save the existing structure. After a lengthy study, review of structural engineering reports and many discussions with the General Contractor, we have determined it is not feasible to simply renovate. Because of the numerous structural issues, worker safety concerns, and cost issues, CCCRA has taken the decision to demolish the existing structure and recreate it. Our goal is to rebuild the structure with an exterior very similar to the existing design and to maintain the 1940s look. The interior will be up-to-date and the structure will meet all current building codes.

Taking this approach will save approximately $300,000 and create less traffic disruption during construction. The end result will be a safer and structurally sound building and a new thriving business that will make Hayesville/Clay County proud and contribute to the local economy.

The project is expected to take 9-12 months to complete. Questions can be directed to CCCRA Board Member/Committee Chair Paul Price at (770) 403-5170 or CCCRA Board Director Tony Wiegold at (828) 631-6803
